How to Stay Warm in a Flat Without Heating?
In summer, losing heating is nothing. In January it is the lifeline that caps every other one.
This is the honest asymmetry in household resilience and the reason a single number is never quite the whole truth. The same flat, the same cupboard, the same power bank, will hold for three comfortable days in June and become genuinely difficult in February. If you live anywhere north of the Alps, heat is the lifeline most likely to decide your number for four months of the year, and the one people think about least.
How fast a flat actually cools
Slower than the panic suggests, faster than comfort allows.
A typical well-insulated apartment loses somewhere around one to two degrees per hour in the first hours after the heating stops, then slows as it approaches the temperature of the building around it. A flat in the middle of a block, with neighbours above, below and on both sides, may barely drop below fifteen degrees for a day or more, because it is surrounded by other heated homes.
A top-floor corner flat, or a detached house, cools much faster.
The practical implication is that the first night is usually survivable in any European apartment without doing anything at all. The problem is the second and third day, and the problem is not usually danger. It is that being cold for sixty hours is exhausting, demoralising, and makes everything else harder.
The rule: heat the person, not the room
Trying to warm a whole flat with no central heating is a losing effort. The volume is too large and the losses too fast.
Everything that works follows from inverting it.
Layers, and the right ones. Several thin layers beat one thick one, because the trapped air between them does the work. Wool or synthetic against the skin rather than cotton, which holds moisture. A hat indoors, which looks absurd and is the single most effective thing on this list. Socks, and something on the feet if the floor is tiled or stone.
Reduce the space. Close doors to rooms you are not using. Pick one room, ideally small, ideally with a sunny aspect during the day, and treat it as the household room. Everyone sleeping in one room is warmer than everyone sleeping in four.
Insulate the room you chose. Curtains closed at dusk and open in daytime sun. A towel or blanket along the bottom of the door. If the windows are single glazed, even bubble wrap or a blanket over them at night makes a measurable difference.
Bedding is your best asset. Duvets are extremely effective insulation and every household already owns them. A duvet used as a cloak while sitting is not a joke; it is warmer than anything you would buy for the purpose.
Warm drinks and food, if you can make them. Less about calories than about the immediate physical effect and the morale, which matters more over three days than people expect.
Move occasionally. Ten minutes of something physical every couple of hours does more than an hour of sitting still under a blanket, and it prevents the slow slide into stiff, cold and miserable.
The one purchase worth making
A small gas camping stove, the type that uses screw-on or pierceable canisters.
It costs very little, stores in a shoebox, and it solves two lifelines at once: hot food and hot drinks when the hob is dead. It is the highest-value single object in this entire subject, and it is why the food question and the heat question are really one question.
Buy spare canisters and store them somewhere cool. Two or three will cover several days of boiling water.
And now the warning, which is not optional.
Anything that burns fuel produces carbon monoxide. Camping stoves, gas heaters, charcoal, paraffin, a barbecue brought indoors. Carbon monoxide has no smell, and the early symptoms of poisoning are headache and drowsiness, which are indistinguishable from being cold and tired, which is why people go to sleep and do not wake up.
Every winter, in every European country, this kills people during outages. It kills more of them than cold does.
So: use a fuel-burning stove only with ventilation, a window genuinely open, and never in a sealed room, never in a bathroom, never overnight, never while sleeping. Never use a barbecue or charcoal indoors under any circumstances. If you use gas indoors at all, a carbon monoxide alarm costs about twenty euros and is worth more than every other item mentioned in these articles combined.
What not to do
Do not use the oven or gas hob to heat the room. Same reason as above, and it is one of the most common improvisations.
Do not rely on electric heaters as your backup, since the failure you are planning for is usually the loss of electricity.
Do not drink alcohol to warm up. It creates the sensation of warmth by moving blood to the skin, which is precisely where you lose it. It makes you colder and less able to judge how cold you are.
Who this is actually serious for
For most healthy adults, three days at fifteen degrees is unpleasant and nothing more.
It is meaningfully different for infants, for anyone elderly, for people who are ill or immobile, and for anyone who cannot generate much heat by moving. If someone in that description lives in your household, or in the flat next door, the heat lifeline is not a comfort question and the plan should include somewhere warmer to go.
Which is the other half of this, and the part no equipment solves: knowing which neighbour has a wood stove, or a gas hob, or simply a warmer flat. In a long cold outage, the household that knows three neighbours is in a better position than the household with the better torch.
What to do this week
Pick the room. Look at it once, in daylight, and decide which room the household would use, then notice what it needs: a draught excluder, a heavier curtain, nothing at all.
Then find your winter bedding and know where it is, since half of it is usually in a box somewhere in October.
If you buy one thing, buy the camping stove. If you buy two, buy a carbon monoxide alarm with it.
