[Tiny Home Heating] How I Heat My Tiny Cabin Without Electricity (Or a Furnace)

No furnace? No grid? Here’s how I heat my tiny cabin all winter long — using no electricity, no fancy tools, and just a few smart systems.

The First Winter Nearly Broke Me

When I first moved into my 18m² wooden cabin, I underestimated winter.

By November, I was waking up with frost on the blankets.
The firewood I thought would last all season? Gone by mid-January.
My fingers were cracked. My water froze. I couldn’t think straight.

I realized something very clearly:

Comfort is survival.

Since then, I’ve built a low-tech, zero-electric system that keeps my cabin warm and dry with minimal fuel — and zero bills.

Let me walk you through it.

☑️ What I Use to Heat My Tiny Cabin

Here’s a quick breakdown of my heating system:

ElementMy Setup
Main heaterSmall wood stove (cast iron)
Backup heatPropane heater + carbon monoxide detector
InsulationDIY wool curtains + bubble wrap on windows
Heat retentionThermal mass: bricks + large water containers
Bed warmthHot water bottle + wool blanket + my dog 🐕
Wind sealingTowels + foam tape around doors/windows

I don’t use electricity at all — everything runs on natural fuel and insulation.

🔥 The Heart of the Cabin: My Tiny Wood Stove

I bought a secondhand cast iron wood stove for €150 from a local seller. It’s heavy, compact, and heats the space in under 30 minutes.

How I run it efficiently:

  • Use dry hardwood only (oak, beech, ash)
  • Batch burn: hot, fast burns instead of slow smolder
  • Add fire bricks inside for thermal mass
  • Close damper once hot to retain heat

👉 Bonus tip:
Place 2 large ceramic pots near the stove. They absorb and slowly release heat.

It took trial and error, but now I can heat the whole cabin with just 2 burns a day.

🧱 Passive Heating Tricks That Changed Everything

I used to think heating meant burning. Now I know heating also means preserving.

Here’s what made a massive difference:

  1. Water barrel + bricks around stove = heat battery
  2. Curtains inside doors = trap heat in zones
  3. Wool rug over floor = keep feet warm
  4. Reflective film behind stove and windows = redirect warmth inward

These passive changes dropped my wood use by 40%.

🌬️ Wind Draft = Enemy #1

Even a tiny leak kills all your heat.
That’s why I did a door and window audit:

  • Foam tape on all seams
  • Door sweep + towel roll under base
  • Repaired cracks with eco caulk
  • Sealed chimney base with wool

👉 Cheap draft stopper kit

Now I barely feel wind inside, even on stormy nights.

🛌 Sleeping Warm (Without Electricity)

At night, I don’t keep the stove running.
Here’s how I stay warm in bed:

  • Wool base layer (top & bottom)
  • Hot water bottle at feet
  • Thick wool blanket + quilt
  • My dog sleeps curled against my back (highly recommended)

💡 Pro tip: Preheat the bed with the hot water bottle 15 minutes before getting in.

🧯 Safety First

  • Fire extinguisher near stove
  • CO + smoke detector
  • Fresh air ventilation pipe
  • Never sleep with propane heater on

Warm is good. Safe is non-negotiable.
